Murphy’s Law Pub and Kitchen has been a staple restaurant in The Beach community since opening in 2001.

Though the famed rooftop and lower-level patios are one of the biggest attractions in warmer months, the pub remains a favourite for residents and visitors all year round.

Like so many businesses across the province affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, restaurants were not deemed an essential service and Murphy’s Law closed their doors to the public on March 16.

Shortly after provincially mandated shut down, the restaurant was up online for takeout and delivery options – with a twist.

Unlike other restaurants, that maintained made-to-order takeout and delivery options, Murphy’s Law also included a meal-kit and grocery service in their options.

Sean Bayley is the founder and president of FAB Restaurant Concepts Inc. which owns and operates Murphy’s Law, in addition to eight other popular spots throughout Toronto.

“We thought (groceries) would be a good service for the neighbourhood,” Bayley said. “It seemed people were not crazy about going to the grocery stores or getting in long line ups.”

In addition to their regular take-out and delivery, Murphy’s Law began offering curbside pickup on grocery orders on April 29, outlining instructions on their Instagram and other social media accounts.

Customers can shop via online portal for fresh produce, pantry items, household essentials, liquor and much more.

Even some hard to find items such as yeast and flour can be purchased through Murphy’s Law.

Local online grocery shopping has become a benefit to the community as it limits unnecessary interaction, saves time and supports the local economy.

“You can do it all online, pay for it online,” Bayley said. “It was something we could offer.”

The grocery and meal-kit services have so far been curbside only. However, Bayley said delivery for The Beach and surrounding communities is in the works and will be announced early next week.

“We will be doing free delivery of groceries for orders over $100,” Bayley said. “We will also be donating $5 from every order to the Fab Family Relief Fund.”

Bayley created the fund a week after closing, “to help out some of the staff that have been having a very difficult time.”

On top of $5 collected from all grocery orders, 50% of gift-card purchases also goes back into the fund which is distributed to employees who have made anonymous requests for additional support.
